The cast is OFF!

Eli got his cast off on Tuesday! His xrays showed that his bones are healing right on target. They cut the cast off and removed the 2nd pin. Eli did awesome during it and in fact the saw scared Anna more than it did Eli! He did cry some, but was very brave during the whole thing, as he was the last time they changed his cast. He now has a raised bump on his elbow where the pin was, but it will scab over and heal leaving a very small scar. He can't extend his arm the whole way yet, but he will be able into within the next month. He returns to the doc for a final follow up the Friday before July 4th to make sure his arm looks good and that the bone has finished healing. Until then, doc said no playgrounds or rough play, but he encouraged swimming. So, Grandma & Grandpa's will be fun to frequent over the next weeks!

The skin under his cast had a lot of dead skin, as expected, and when Eli scratched it (as I would have immediately, too!), it turned into a little rash. We have treated it with hydrocortisone cream and he wore a sock over his arm for the first evening. A good bath took off the dead skin and the rash has pretty much gone away.

So far Eli has done well with adapting to no cast and adjusting his play. As it was when he got his first cast put on, I was the one who worried too much about how he would do, and he adapted very quickly! I think these next weeks will fly by and he will have full range and a completely healed arm!

Prior to seeing the doctor, we were informed that they were running at least an hour behind schedule. I figured as much since the waiting room was packed. Our first visit we were just one of a few families so I was shocked to see so many people at the same day and time as 2 weeks prior. Summer!! They did a neat thing and gave pagers to those who wanted to walk around, go to the cafeteria, etc. while they waited and would be paged when it was time. We chose this route and went to the CMH cafeteria which of course, was very child friendly. Eli enjoyed himself playing with another boy after eating some ice cream with mommy & Anna:

As many of you know, a Missouri town, Joplin, was devastated by a tornado a little over 2 weeks ago on our anniversary (5/22/11). I heard the boy Eli was playing with tell Eli that his house had been crushed by a tornado. I had also seen his brother and other family in the ortho waiting room so I knew they were there for the same reason. I then saw that the boy had a brother who was sitting in a stroller, I would guess around age 2, with 2 broken legs. It immediately occured to me that this family may have been from Joplin as I heard on the radio that many children were transferred to CMH for treatment. This gave me great appreciation and thankfulness.

Thanks for checking in!
